Beach Huts - Year 6

Welcome to Beach Huts Class

Beach Huts

Teacher comment: Welcome to a brand new year in Beach Huts. I am very much looking forward to this year with the children and hope they are too!  We work hard in Beach Huts, but have fun while we are learning. This year, Miss Bailey is working with us, and is keen to get started.

Our topic this term is ‘Space: The Final Frontier” - a topic which is a much loved favourite with children.

In Literacy, we will be starting the term composing performance poetry, and the children will have the opportunity to perform their compositions.. We will then hone our narrative writing skills using a narrative poem as a stimulus. There will be a significant emphasis on spelling, grammar and punctuation, and we will start the term revising word classes, and learning how to use different classes of words in our work to greater effect.

The term will start with a look at place value in numbers up to 1 million, and place value in decimal numbers up to 3 decimal places. The children will move on to using negative numbers in context. The children will use their knowledge to problem solve and we will continue to teach maths through our Mastery flow model. We will be working on increasing fluency, speed and accuracy by looking at patterns, and using what we know to tackle new subjects  and difficult problems.

Our topic this term will be Space. We will be looking at Earth in relation to the solar system, stars, suns and other planets.  We will be looking at Space exploration and will use it as a stimulus for art and design and technology.

Other Information

Children should be reading every night with an adult. Please read with your child as many times a week as you can and sign their reading diary. Reading diaries are checked every morning by an adult. Children who read with an adult 5 times are eligible for entry into the ‘reading challenge’ and have a chance to win a book.

WOW assemblies are each and every Friday at 2:30p.m.

We invite all Parents/Carers to our WOW assembly. Each week at least one child per class receives the WOW award for something brilliant they have done that week!

In the Summer Term the children will be taking their SATs tests in (reading, maths and spelling, punctuation and grammar). There is information about how you can help your child on our website, and there will be more information in due course. In the meantime, please ensure that your child reads regularly and completes their homework. This is all preparation for the tests.
