Mathematics Considerable importance is attached to the children achieving and understanding mathematical processes, concepts and skills. The attitude we take at Langer Primary Academy is to present Maths in a way that makes it exciting, relevant and easy, allowing the children to actively participate in the learning process, thus creating a sense of achievement and confidence. There is a strong emphasis on the development of mental arithmetic and giving opportunities for pupils to use and apply mathematics in real life situations. Maths is taught through a daily Maths lesson which follows the New National Primary Curriculum. We recognise the importance of practical activities, problem solving and investigational work. In order to develop Mathematical skills some pupils may be set for their Maths lesson. Class teachers also plan for opportunities to develop and apply key mathematical skills in other subjects throughout the year. Children also take part in a daily Snappy Maths Session (10 minutes), a programme that aims to raise children’s attainment in mental maths through rapid recall of number bonds and table facts. “Teachers have good subject knowledge of mathematics, and pupils make good progress as a result. New strategies for teaching mathematics have recently been implemented and the impact of these on further improving the quality of teaching and learning is already evident.” (Ofsted, January 2016) Provision in the curriculum will enable pupils to:- - Count and calculate in increasingly complex contexts, including those that cannot be experienced first hand |
