Welcome to Pebbles

Pebbles

Teacher comment: "A very warm welcome to Pebbles Class.

My name is Mrs Macdonald and I am the class teacher. I am delighted to have you in my class this year and look forward to sharing every aspect of school life with you and your family. In Pebbles we enjoy learning through play and there are lots of different areas in and outside of the classroom for you to explore. There are three other adults who also work in Pebbles class they are Mrs Entwistle, Mrs Reynolds and Mrs Richardson. In Pebbles we like to have fun and enjoy our learning!"

Our topic this term is Lands and Oceans. We will be working closely with Key Stage 1 who also have the same topic.

In Personal, Social & Emotional Development we are learning to explain what we know and what we understand, we will talk about what we have learnt about other countries and what we understand about them. We are also taking steps to resolve conflicts and finding a compromise as well as we will do this through SMART Thinking. We are also developing our confidence to share our needs, wants, interests and opinions.

In Communication & Language we are learning to maintain attention and concentrate especially when we are on the carpet. We will focusing on our two-channelled attention and learning how to respond to instructions. In Literacy we will be learning all about instructions so it is important for us to show that we understand and can follow them first. We will also be developing our listening and responding skills when we use book talk to discuss the different stories we read.

In Physical Development we are learning to use different movements with mark making equipment such as using anticlockwise movements and retracing vertical lines. We will also be working really hard on forming our letters correctly making sure we start and finish at the correct place, this will be helped by our daily handwriting sessions. We enjoy challenges in Pebbles and we are learning all about how to tackle new challenges  safely and how to manage our risks.

In Literacy we are learning to explain the marks we make when we draw, paint and write. We are really focussing on using our phonic knowledge to hear the sounds in words to be able to segment them and blend them together - which will help us to write them. We are also still working on writing full sentences as we have been working really hard on this. We now all have our own independent writing books and the children will be encouraged to mark make and write in them. We are going to learning all about different countries during our topic and we will looking at stories from all over the world. We will also be looking at different types of writing for example we will be writing a set of instructions on how to make a boat and an invitation to our class assembly.

In Mathematics we are using the Mastery Flow approach in our lessons. The children start on Engaging and make their way through Doing, Showing and Thinking at their own pace. This allows them to make rapid progress in Mathematics. Although the activities aren’t topic related their will be other Mathematics activities available in continuous provision such as using positional language when looking at a treasure map, using shape to make pictures of ocean animals, order and sequence familiar events in our year in Pebbles.

In Understanding the World we are learning to develop our understanding of growth, decay and changes over time which will correspond to the planting of our vegetables in the garden. We will also look at the different vegetables and fruits we are growing and what other countries they are grown in. We will also show care and concern for living things and the environment as we look at ocean and what we can do to look after it. As we look at countries around the world we will look closely at the similarities, differences, patterns and change between different countries.

In Expressive Arts & Design we are learning to become more independent in using and exploring media. The children will be developing their independence in constructing with a purpose in mind whilst using a variety of resources, tools and techniques. Whilst we are learning about different stories from around the world we will be introducing the stories and narratives into our play.
